My father-in-law (Jim) was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Only he was not in Korea, he was in Germany — as a General’s driver.
One evening, Jim drove the General to the Officer’s Club. It was a particularly cold evening, and the General did not want to waste gas by keeping the car running for warmth, so he had Jim come into the Officer’s Club and had him sit out of the way near the coat check.
About an hour later, a young Second Lieutenant entered the Officer’s Club and headed to the coat check. Jim stood up as protocol demanded, and upon seeing him the Second Lieutenant became enraged. He yelled, “You’re not allowed to be in here! You’re on report!”
As luck would have it, the General was on his way out, and he calmly said to the Second Lieutenant, “He’s with me.”
There’s a crude U.S. military expression dealing with the two biological options that were available to the Second Lieutenant at that point, but we need not repeat it here.
The moral of the story is: Sometimes all you need is someone to vouch for you.
